Pune’s ‘gold shirt’ man killed with stones, sharp weapons,Police Arrest Four Suspects

Dattatray Phuge, a man famous for possessing a golden shirt worth Rs 1.2 crore, was stoned to death last night at 11:30 am at Dighi near Pune. He was a chit-fund businessman and an aspiring politician.Police suspect the murder is related to a chit-fund scam and four arrests have been made so far.Dattatray’s wife Seema is an NCP corporator in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation near Pune.

Dattatray Phuge had floated a Wakratund chit fund through which he collected money from several investors, police officials said. Some of these investors had complained about irregularities in his company in the past and could be behind his murder, sources said.Phuge’s wife Seema said some people came to their house in Bhosari late on Thursday night and asked her husband to accompany them.“After taking my husband to Bharatmata nagar in Dighi, they attacked him with stones and sharp weapons,” said Seema, who is an ex-corporator from the Nationalist Congress Party.Police officials probing the case said they suspect financial trouble could be the reason behind the killing.Phuge’s pictures first appeared in the media after he wore a specially made shirt using 22-carat gold that weighed 3.5 kilogrammes.

At the time, Phuge had maintained that he made the gold shirt to attract people’s attention.

Wearing gold to show strength and get attention is not new in this wealthy belt of Pune. Ramesh Wanjale was the original gold man, who went on to become an MLA. He won the 2009 assembly election on an MNS ticket by a huge margin.Wanjale died in 2011 of cardiac arrest.
